Creating Space to Lead: Tools of Engagement

Published: May 18th, 2017

You can optimize the energetic field of your leadership and communication by learning to cultivate core aspects of each of the four Alpha Element Vitality Types. For example, the deliberate approach of Pragmatist Vitality evokes a sense of healthy detachment that provides a grounded, clear, and practical perspective. This non-reactive stance generates a sense of confidence, stability and structure which opens up the space to lead by being rather than doing.

On the other hand, the Pathfinder-dominant leader takes an investigative approach and creates the space for flexibility and process by actively encouraging input and analysis. Today´s fast-paced, everchanging environment requires leaders that understand the strengths and vulnerabilities of their natural communicaiton style along with a dynamic range of approaches to stimulate proactive engagement.

Sometimes leaders have to step out of their comfort zone and create a new space from which to lead. Consider the differentiation of vitality and engagement of the more extroverted Vitality Types – Catalyst and Torchbearer. No matter what your natural style of leadership is, you can apply each Vitality Type as tools of engagement for opening a particular space from which to to lead.

Asking “What if?” and stepping back to listen for possibilities applies Catalyst Vitality as a tool of engagement by evoking a sense of anticipation. On the other hand, focusing on “What?”-questions generates a very different consciousness and space from which to lead. This space stimulates forward-leaning, immideate action which we associate with Torchbearer´s Vitality.
